Finding Hope Through Grief
Diana first joined Concordia in January of 1971. Years later, after experiencing one of life’s most difficult losses, she returned to the church seeking comfort and guidance during a season of overwhelming grief.
“Once I lost my husband, I really felt the need for God,” Diana shared. “I was reading my Bible every day, but I felt like I needed more.”
Coming back to Concordia became an important step in her healing journey. Not long after returning, Diana was introduced to GriefShare, a support group designed for those navigating loss and grief. What she found there was more than support, she found friendship, encouragement, and hope.
“If you’re grieving and you don’t know how to pull yourself out of it, GriefShare is the place to be,” she said. “These people are awesome, and I’ve made very good friends, very close friends because of that.”
Through GriefShare and the relationships she has built at Concordia, Diana says her perspective on life has changed. She describes herself as becoming “a new me,” learning to trust God as He guides her through a new season of life.
“I see how God is leading the new me,” Diana said. “What I was before is gone, and what I’ve got now is becoming new.”
Today, Diana stays active at Concordia by volunteering and connecting with others. She says serving alongside fellow believers has strengthened her faith and given her opportunities to share God’s love with others.
“The more people that you’re in contact with, the stronger your faith can grow,” she explained.
Looking back, Diana says she cannot imagine walking through grief without the support of her church family and the reassurance of God’s presence.
“When I came back to church, other people would say just the right things, or just being there helped,” she said. “Knowing that God is going to guide me and help me… it makes you feel so loved.”
Diana’s story is a reminder that even in seasons of loss and uncertainty, God continues to work through community, encouragement, and faith. Healing may not happen overnight, but no one has to walk through grief alone.
If you or someone you know is struggling with grief, Concordia’s GriefShare ministry offers a place of support, hope, and connection for those navigating loss together. Contact Louise Tiemann or the church office for more information.
